Operational costs on the rise again: ATRI

Date: 26.09.2014 / to news list

Arlington, VA – The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) released the findings of its 2014 analysis of operational costs of trucking today.

The company found that the average marginal cost per mile last year was $1.68, which was up from $1.63 last year. The ongoing driver shortage is to blame for the rise as motor carriers are increasing wages to ensure driver retention.

“Carriers have experienced significant increases in equipment and labor costs, as well as second-level line items like tolls and health care benefits.  Given tightening capacity and strengthening freight demand, ATRI’s operational costs report enables carriers to evaluate business opportunities wisely,” said Andrew Boyle, executive vice-president of Boyle Transportation and a member of ATRI’s Research Advisory Committee.

ATRI also reports average costs per hour and includes cost breakouts by industry sector.
